Lines Picks Up a Hat Trick of South Australian Titles PDF Print E-mail

Steve Lines won his third South Australian Sprintcar Title in succession last Sunday night (January 3) at Murray Bridge Speedway and to say that he had to earn it would be a large understatement.

The Mt. Gambier (SA) based racers South Australian Title defence started off in the best possible way when he dominated his opening heat race of the night but it then turned pear shaped during the second heat race after he rolled over after a coming together with a fellow competitor. Due to failing to finish his second heat race, Lines missed the ‘Top 6’ pole shootout and started the South Australian Title deciding feature race out of position eight in the field and he certainly had his work cut out for him, especially with the likes of American import Craig Dollansky and pole sitter Jamie Cobby ahead of him.

Lines charged his way forward from the beginning of the 30-lap feature race and as a result moved into second place after only 10 completed laps. Lines then chased after leader Dollansky and past him for the lead with five laps remaining after the latter had suffered a dislodged front wing.

Once in control of the feature race lead the action didn’t stop there for Lines as he was forced to spin to a stop in order to avoid a crash between two lapped cars with two laps remaining. Fortunately Lines was able to restart in the lead position due to the red light having already been displayed at the time of when he spun to a stop. Lines’ VIC # 45 H.A. Young Plumbing / Camden Neon Signs backed J&J suffered some wing damage in the incident, however it wasn’t enough to deny him of the victory as he raced to the chequered flag in the remaining two laps to pick up his third South Australian Title victory in a row.

"We certainly didn’t get our third South Australian Title handed to us, as we had to work very hard for it and it makes this win even more satisfying," Lines expressed. "Crashing out in my second heat race and having to start the feature race well down the field made the whole night very tough but we knuckled down and drove to the win. We were blessed with a good setup and a bit of luck but we also used the highline to great effect which allowed us to work our way forward."

This Saturday night (January 9) Lines will compete at Speedway City (Adelaide, SA) for the latest round of their track championship.
